FARMERS SUICIDE IN INDIA
India is an agrarian country. Agriculture is the backbone of India. Yet the farmers who are the main producers of food are being pushed to a situation that leads them to commit suicide. Farmers lack education and the only job they know is farming. Their gods are the land where they cultivate and the cattle that help them. But these two are now being targeted and diminished. According to the recent surveys farmers suicide are decreasing. They say so.. But what is the truth? Still farmers are the ones affected by the greedy businessmen and greedy middlemen. Their death tolls are still on the rise.. But the truth is hidden from the society. People will pay no attention to the tortures faced by farmers since there is still availability of food in the nation. But the slow disappearance of farmers from our country will not only effect our food supply but also economy will be effected. More and more food products will be imported than exported. It will effect the nation economically. We will be indebted to other countries and the condition will persist to be. Farmer suicide is not an issue faced by only a few states of our country.. But it's a problem of our nation as a whole.
Agriculture is an unorganized sector. It doesn't have an systematic institutional or organizational planning for cultivation, irrigation, harvesting etc. The plans by the government doesn't reach the marginal farmers. The ground reality is that the farmers nowadays have very small land (at most 2 hectares)of their own for cultivation. Cultivation in such small areas is not economically feasible. Thus the farmers become vulnerable. Sometimes they have to pay part of their earnings to their landlords. Another problem faced by the farmers are the money grabbing middlemen. The agricultarists do not get the deserved selling value for their crops due to the middlemen and greedy businessmen. To abolish this problem the government should promote the plan called "ULAVAR SANTHAI"(FARMERS MARKET ), where the farmers can directly sell their products at reasonable price. Also we can help the farmers by buying vegetables from them without bargaining. We do not bargain at malls and supermarkets!! Those big businessmen earn easily by doing nothing and the poor farmers give away their lives due to lack of money even after toiling hard for months. The schemes by the government do not reach the small farmers. On the contrary, big landlords are benefitted by such schemes. One of the worst problems faced by the present day agricultarists is real estate mafia! Even the fertile lands best suited for agriculture are being sold to the real estate where they are being divided as plots and sold at high prices. Strict measures against land grabbing must be implemented. The main reason for farmer suicide is indebtness and debt burden. The high interest rates by the loan lending people and the exorbitant rates at which the farmers are forced to return the money and the lack of income causes the poor farmers to take their own lives. Some farmers commit suicide along with their family.
Exorbitant interest rates should be declared illegal and the people disobeying need to be punished by law. Strict measures need to be undertaken for the greedy moneylenders. As the youth of the nation, we must raise our support for agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of India and we, the youngsters are the pillars of our nation. Farming is not something to be ashamed of. It is something everyone must praise. Food is a necessity for life and so are the producers I.e. our farmers. The state and central government are taking steps to help the farmers. But we must help those schemes reach them. As educated individuals we must make it our duty to educate the farmers so that they can know about the schemes provided by the government. And about the advanced methods of farming. Crop rotation, rain water harvesting, etc. can help the farmers if they get the awareness about them. Like industrial sectors there should also be agricultural zones where only agriculture related activities will be allowed. Shortage of water and managent of water is another problem. Better methods of irrigation should be developed. Participation of youth in agriculture is economically possible. It can be attained by introduction of new technologies. We must create awareness about alternative methods of income to the farmers. Like skills other than farming can be taught to them. And animal husbandry or fisheries, timber production etc.
This is the time for change. Let the change begin with the factor that has always made our nation stand strong. No one else is going to be part of the change unless you are! Every little action creates a difference. Let this be a more humanitarian approach than an economic one. Let's not forget that we are a net agricultural food producing country. As agricultarists we must be united. We must avoid the corporate lobbies hidden business tricks and help farmers. The government should facilitate farming by giving good options to the farmers. The governing body must know that without us they cannot work. We must know.. Our next generation must know that 'it is a pride to be a farmer'. The struggle of the farmers is the struggle of each one of us.. Our families.. Now is the time to be united. Forget the differences and fight for our family.. Our farmers.. Our nation.!
